Updated: Nov 14

The lights dim, the curtain rises, and the magic of theatre begins. For 35 years, Footlights Theatre Group has been a beacon of creativity and passion in our community.

In this blog post, we will explore the journey of Footlights Theatre Group, the impact it has had on the community, and the memories that have been created over the years. Join us as we take a closer look at this remarkable group and the vibrant world of theatre they have built.

A Brief History of Footlights Theatre Group

Footlights Theatre Group was founded in 1990 by a small group of drama enthusiasts led by Roisin-Anne McGeown. Their goal was simple: to create a space where people could come together to express themselves through the art of performance. Roisin-Anne has forged a path for young performers to shine in the Dungannon area in the intervening decades, building this remarkable ensemble from the ground up.

From its humble beginnings, the group quickly grew in popularity. They started with small productions in St Patrick's Hall, showcasing classic plays and original works. As word spread, audiences grew, and so did the ambition of the group.

Following the loss of St Patrick's Hall as a community space, Footlights relocated to CRAIC Theatre and Arts Centre as a performance venue. From its humble background, it grew in professionalism and reach in this new endeavour.

The Heart of the Community

One of the most significant aspects of Footlights Drama Group is its connection to the community. The group has always been committed to involving local talent, whether they are seasoned actors or newcomers to the stage.

This commitment has fostered a sense of belonging among members. Many have formed lifelong friendships through their shared love of theatre.

Footlights has not only entertained audiences but has also inspired its members. Many young people have discovered their passion for acting and storytelling through the group. Its members have gone on to careers in performing arts, sound production, arts management and direction. The impact of this organisation extends far beyond the stage.

Behind the Scenes

While the performances are what audiences see, the magic of theatre happens behind the scenes. Footlights Theatre Group is supported by a dedicated team of volunteers who work tirelessly to bring each production to life.

From set design to costume creation, every detail is carefully considered. The technical crew ensures that lighting and sound enhance the performances, creating an immersive experience for the audience. If you love the idea of being involved in theatre, but the stage is not for you, Footlights has a place for you.

The Future of Footlights

Looking ahead, Footlights Drama Group is excited about the future. With a strong foundation built over decades, the group is ready to embrace new challenges and opportunities.
